Counselors
join us two weeks prior to camper arrival for a professional
training session. We talk about child development
issues and relationship building, safety and first aid,
and the many ways in which we can support children's emerging
sense of independence. Cabin Staff prepare to create
a family atmosphere in the cabin, and instructors practice
classes in their program areas. We can't wait for
campers to arrive!

Ask Peter and Meg about their hiring, training and ongoing
support of Hidden Valley's counseling and teaching staff.

"Our
daughter chose Hidden Valley from the several camps she
saw in videos. But videos cannot guarantee that there will
be a caring person who takes time to notice that a child
who is generally sunny may need some attention from time
to time... I cannot tell you how comforting it was for us
to know that you were there for her when she most needed
a friend... Counselors like yourself make all the difference
in a child's life and I want to thank you from the bottom
of my heart. "

Questions and Answers
about working at Hidden Valley
Camp
|
|

What are my responsibilities? Counselors' jobs break
down into two categories: Staff teach or assist 4 workshops
daily. Additionally, staff members live in a cabin with
one or two other counselors, and share responsibility
for the care of a group of campers.
Who is on the staff? We look for mature, creative,
independent people who have interesting backgrounds and
previous experience with children. Staff come from all
over the U.S. as well as about 15 staff people from nations
such as Australia, Sweden, Britain, Holland, etc. The
average age of the staff is 24. We are looking for high
school graduate or older, please.
What are the children like?
About 40 U.S. states and other countries were represented
last summer. This is an active, creative group of children,
oriented to our non-traditional camp values.
What's your philosophy?
H.V.C. is unregimented, non-competitive and non-sectarian.
Campers have many choices within a supportive structure.
In our informal atmosphere, we minimize hierarchy and
foster independence and creativity among staff members.
What's the food like? Excellent! A variety of
fresh foods. Plenty of seconds and choices, including
a lunchtime salad bar. And a balanced vegie alternative
at all meals.
