There She Was Just A-Walkin’ Down the Street

Wednesday, August 7th, 2013

Hello, hi there, how you doin’, HVC friends and fam? Things are going swimmingly here!

Yesterday was yet again… Aloha Tuesday. A counselor was honored at evening meeting by the ukulele class. There was a flower lei, some nice strumming of ukes, and giggles. Some more Wheel of Misfortune prizes were also handed out and cabins will be claiming them throughout the week, either at meetings or during rest period.

Last night, campers danced through the decades at the Decades Dance! The soundtrack to the evening was everything from Cotton Eyed Joe to Don’t Stop Believin’ to Can’t Hold Us Down to Grease to Tubthumping to I Knew You Were Trouble. Costumes ranged in time-frame from the 1890’s to the future 2120! Some stellar activities included hula hooping, face painting, Globetrotter basketball, 1980’s aerobics, and more.

In other news, there is now a giant raku fire pit on main camp. Counselors and campers dug a hole, treated the pottery, and then puts them inside of the hole to fire it. It’s a kiln in the ground! Awesome.

Today is the first day of new minis! So when campers signed up for period classes, if they so chose, they were able to pick two activities they would be able to do those two weeks. For example, the first four days might have been Lake Adventures, but now is glass beads!

It’s a simply glorious day here. The Weather Guy’s predicted 10/10 seems to coming true! The b-e-a-u-tiful Pollock string quartet leaves us today. It has been fantastic having their smiling faces around, as well as their incredible performances. There are so many different musical instruments around camp, but violin and cello are two that I have not heard here until this week… and it’s been so great. We wish them the safest travels!

Later on tonight is cabin night… and the feeling’s right… oh yes, it’s cabin night, oh what a night (oh, what a night). And I’ve heard whispers of some really original ideas for what will ensue, it will surely be a night to remember!

Here is the 3rd Hidden Valley podcast, where they interview arts classes teachers and students:

Good Day Sunshine!

Tuesday, August 6th, 2013

Hey there! Olive Oyl here with lots of news for you! It’s another beautiful and sunny day here at Hidden Valley Camp, quite the perfect weather for our Tuesday traditions, No Mail No Meal and Aloha Tuesday. Campers will send a letter home as their ticket into dinner tonight and the most festive Hawaiian outfit will be honored tonight at evening program!

We had a fabulous lazy day yesterday, with the older half going to the beach and younger half staying on camp for Harry Potter Day. Some Hogwarts highlights were making potions, designing house crests on wooden blocks, harry potter puppetry, a herbology creek walk, and a scavenger hunt for horcruxes. The folks at the beach cooled off in the crisp water and sunbathed…how relaxing! Once everyone was back at camp, we reconvened for Valleyfest, the camper talent show. Due to the lovely weather, we held half of the show outside and then moved inside later on in the evening. There were 22 incredible acts, ranging from gymnastics to juggling to martial arts to rubik’s cube solving. There was also music, with guitar, ukulele, piano, and singing. And of course, lots of dancing, like “Gangnum Style” and “The Harlem Shake.” There were lots of laughs throughout the night, thanks to funny acts like voice impersonation and Potter Puppet Pals. All in all, it was a magical and restful day and campers are eager to continue with their classes today.

This morning we got a special musical treat, as the string quartet serenaded camp from the gazebo before morning meeting. The quartet will be having an open rehearsal this afternoon during interest groups and will be giving another performance this evening…I can’t wait! Speaking of the quartet, the folks in Alive got to spend some time with them yesterday, participating in a workshop in the afternoon and then hearing a special performance in he evening. Alive also made beautiful paper lanterns, be sure to check out the photos for a look!

Tonight we’re looking forward to some more fun with a Dance Through the Decades, where campers can come dressed in fashions from various eras, whether it be 80’s workout girl, 50’s greaser, 60’s hippie, or 70’s disco diva. There will also be tons of time period activities and of course some throwback dancing!

Don’t forget to check out  some awesome pictures!

Lots of love,
Olive

We’re Having a Wheely Wheely Good Time

Monday, August 5th, 2013

Hi All,
George of the Jungle here for all your insights into today’s Lazy Day, but before we get into all the need-to-know details of today’s amazing activities, Older Half at the Beach and Younger Half Harry Potter Day, I’ve got the inside scoop on Last Nights incredible Wheel of Misfortune.

Last Night after dinner and a spectacular performance by a majestic string quartet currently paying a visit to camp.  Campers headed on down to the Rec Hall and oh what a sight was to be had. Counselors adorned the tops of the Pottery Studio, The Hilton Bathrooms and the Rec Hall dressed as various Capital members from the post-apocalyptic nation Panem. Panem is a fictional country from the Book and Film series the Hunger Games which as you may remember from yesterday’s news update was the theme for this years Wheel of Misfortune. Campers delighted in the weird and wonderful outside acts including water balloons filled with glitter, face painting, counselors tied to trees and the silent guards who blocked the entrance to the Rec hall which acted as the Hunger Games ‘arena’.

Soon the doors were flung open and my inside sources report that it was an eerie but incredible sight to be seen. Our 10 tributes who had been chosen from the Reaping two days ago were scattered across the stage preparing for their first battle and our Capital hosts, the enigmatically dressed, Effie Trinkett and Cesar could be seen through a mock television screen constructed during the day.

As Peter introduced the Wheel of Misfortune and handed the ‘Games’ over to the Capital Hosts a countdown sounded throughout the Rec Hall and our tributes ran outside to the ‘Cornucopia’ and the first of many epic battles.  Throughout the night Campers were offered the chance to compete in a variety of weird, wacky and gross games in order to aid the various favorite tributes in their quest to win the Games. Campers were selected by Gruesome a garbage bag clad AWAC who mysteriously emerged on stage with his camp-famous hockey stick to choose his ‘victims’. The aforementioned games played throughout the Wheel last night included…

‘Catching Bees’ which involved campers having their hands covered in honey and then attempting to catch as many flying crepe paper bees as possible.
Using only their feet and toes to uncover precious glass beads from a kiddy pool filled with green jello and ice.
Whipped Cream and Chocolate Pudding hair styling.
and Of course the traditional sibling challenge, which this year involved siblings attempting to camouflage one another using buckets full of mud…

At the end of each Game many a camper received a whipped cream pie in the face and each cabin went home with a special prize to be collected upon by the cabin at a time of their choosing. Prizes are offered up by counselors and involve such thing as – hair dying, waiting on a table for breakfast, tractor rides, baking cookies, serenading cabins and so much more.

All in all it was an incredible night of wackiness and fun and tired campers returned to their cabins for a good nights rest in preparation for today’s lazy day!

The Older Half enjoyed their 15 minutes extra sleep this morning and with the sun shinning donned bathing suits in preparation for their day at the beach today. At the beach there will be sand castle construction, reading circles, rock exploration, frisbee and of course plenty of swimming time. The Older Half will return to camp, I imagine with half the beach in their bags and shoes, this afternoon for rest period and some cabin clean up time before rejoining camp to swap lazy day stories at evening meeting.

Younger Half will be venturing into yet another world of magical fiction with today’s Harry Potter Day. Both Counselors and Campers are incredibly excited for the beloved world to take over camp this morning. Campers will be sorted into one of the four houses, Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Slytherin and Ravenclaw before embarking upon an array of Hogwarts Classes including Care of Magical Creatures at the Animal Barn, Potions Class, Quidditch Lessons up on Tipi Zip, Transfiguration and Herbology down at the Creek. The Younger Half will also have their own time in the sun enjoying an afternoon by the Pool before joining the Older Half for Meeting, delicious dinner and today’s evening program Valleyfest.
Valleyfest is an open, supportive and fun chance for campers to show off their incredible talents before the camp and after last sessions 32 acts I can’t wait to see what we have in store tonight!

Check out these some snaps shots from last nights Wheel of Misfortune Snap Shots, there will be plenty more Wheel and Lazy Day Pictures to come.

Always,
George of the Jungle.

Hungry for the Wheel Of Misfortune

Sunday, August 4th, 2013

Hi there, Hidden Valley fans! What’s the haps?

It’s Bagel Sunday over here and though it’s a bit cooler in temperature, the sun is shining and it looks like it’s going to be another lovely day.

The Wheel of Misfortune’s theme was announced last night during evening meeting in a very theatrical way. We had a Reaping here last night where tributes from different districts around camp were called up to participate in… The Hunger Games! But don’t you worry, it will be a fun, characteristic of Hidden Valley spoof. This morning at meeting, the tributes were seen again, this time in a parade. They rode by on motorcycles, a tractor, a truck, and horses. They’ll be seen again tonight during The Wheel!

Last night, cabin groups were split into four different groups and participated in wonderful and different activities all around camp.

The younger cabins: LCH, Avalon, Loons, Down Under, French Quarter, Paquatahnee, and Gimme Shelter ran in a frenzy all around the back yard hunting for the Queen’s “candy” (hidden colored balls). There were challengers giving campers something to do in exchange for candy and bandits doing the same, but they would take the candy if the challenge was not completed. Once the race was done, cabin groups went to the soccer field for more games.

The middle half cabins: Chateau Fiasco, Treasure Island, Shangri-La, and Valhalla had a water party at the pool! There was a slip n’ slide, as always, a splatter paint party, a riveting game of drip, drip, drop (which is duck, duck, goose but with water), water balloons, and water serenading.

Haley’s Comet had a cabin night of s’mores at the Forbidden Planet firepit and Camelot had a hot tub party near the Foothills!

The oldest cabins: Atlantis, Forbidden Planet, Fiddler’s Green, and Taj Mahal walked up the road to hang out at Blodgett with the teen apprentices. They were given a tour of the house and talked to about the fantastic teen program opportunities that HVC has to offer. They hung out in the back yard, playing frisbee, sitting around a fire, and eating ice cream.

The suspense is high for The Wheel of Misfortune is tonight and there will be plenty of photos and updates tomorrow! But until then, here are photographs from last night and this morning.

Don’t forget to look below for some awesome Hunger Games preview photos and last night’s various activities!

May the odds be ever in your favor,

PK Day All the Way!

Saturday, August 3rd, 2013

Hey there, friends! Olive Oyl here with your daily news! It’s the second day of classes and we’re getting into the swing of things again. It was a special morning on this “PK Day,” where all of the counselors donned “PK” style shirts (button-up, patterned, and arresting to the eyes) and shouted back “Hey Is For Horses!” after Peter’s “Hey You Guys!” at morning meeting. It was the counselor’s way of tributing the big man behind the scenes here at Hidden Valley.

Last night was electives and we had tons of fabulous activities to choose from. Some new highlights were a water obstacle course, a Disney singalong, a paint party, disc golf, and glass beads. There were the classics cookie baking, tipi zip, and capture the flag. Campers had a variety of options to choose from, whether it was making art, music, competing, or enjoying nature.

Tonight’s evening program is sure to bring more fun, with Candy Crush for the younger half, water activities for the middle half, and a teen party for the older half (yes, there are three halves here at HVC). Candy Crush involves a series of challenges across camp in order to collect balls. Water activities will take place at the pool, where they’ll be swimming, a slip and slide, bobbing for apples, plus more involving H20. The teen party will take place at Blodgett House, where the older boys and girls cabins will hang out with the Apprentices.

Speaking of teens, it’s time for a teen update! Alive has been busy signing up for new classes, like found percussion, glass beads, and music beats. Last night the group made costumes for Belfast Statue Night, ranging from paints on a palette to Greek Gods. Lots of hard work and creativity went into their designs and the final product was amazing. The goal was to raise money for the Belfast Arts District, and both campers and the people of Belfast enjoyed the project.

Hopefully the light schvitz will hold off for the rest of the day as we continue to make progress in our new set of classes! Today marks the halfway point of the session which means a lot of awesomeness has already happened, but there’s also much to look forward to. The Wheel of Misfortune is tomorrow’s evening program, and I know I can’t wait for the all the mystery and madness. Coming up next week we also have ValleyFest, the camper talent show, and The Play and Musical…so much camper talent, it’s sure to be incredible!

We also say goodbye to a special group today, the Chinese campers, who have been a delight sharing their culture and becoming members of our Hidden Valley community. We wish them a happy rest of summer and hope to see them in the future!

Check out our photos below from electives and morning meeting!

Keep on keepin’ on,
Olive

Do You Believe in Magic?

Friday, August 2nd, 2013

Hey, hi, hello! Alleycat here to chit chat about the latest Hidden Valley adventures.

Some highlights from last night’s evening program include Gus the Old Prospector as a cabin inspector, Taj Mahal’s inspirational thought of the day, Forbidden Planet’s gurus of uselessness revealed a bit of trivia.

Last night’s evening program was magical, to say the least… with the return of a HVC favorite, Peter Boie! Bunches of campers trotted up on stage and assisted Mr. Boie in his tricks and illusions! The riddle how many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop was solved and successfully predicted, a straightjacket and thumb handcuffs were both broken out of, and much, much more. It was a quirky evening full of giggles and slight of hand!

This morning, one of the best interest groups in my humble opinion, was introduced… the sacrificing of cucumbers/pickles in Meg’s Planet! Every fifth period, Meg and Sarah “orbit” in the planet, which means they do a variety of spectacular activities, anything from fairy house making to croquet to going on a wild mushroom hunt. But today, oh today, they will be making their own pickles… and then eventually devouring them!

Some other interest groups of note this morning were drawing last night’s dreams, teaching the kittens to do cartwheels in the animal pen, marker fencing, the introduction of a chess tournament, and the ever popular Magic the Gathering/Pokemon games in the red barn. Since it’s a bit schvitzy today, a delightful reading circle will also take place in the red barn beside a glowing fire.

It’s the first day of classes and our new two weekers are cozy in their cabins and running around camp like they already own the place! The transition has been incredibly smooth and there are so many fun things on the agenda. Tonight’s evening program is Electives! A list of those activities as well as photos will follow tomorrow.

Until then, below are some photos from yesterday’s lazy day and this morning’s meeting!

It’s been real..It’s been nice…It’s been real nice,

It’s A Beautiful Day, Don’t Let It Get Away!

Thursday, August 1st, 2013

Good afternoon, Hidden Valley fans! How are things? Things are bustling around here today. It’s a lazy lazy day, kids rolled out of bed and into breakfast in their finest PJs. Soon after a breakfast of croissants, eggs, cinnamon apple oatmeal, toast, and the like, campers changed into their swimsuits and younger half headed down to the pool for pool activities!

There were reading circles, Magic the Gathering tournaments, facepainting, frisbee, and even a slip and slide! After enjoying some sun and fun down at the pool, we signed up for our next batch of classes! Some new ones being offered these two weeks are an alternate surfaces art class, collage, comic book creation, figure drawing, t-shirt design, ballet beats, a bug’s life, flash mob, mad science, meditation, found percussive music, ten minute playwriting, and boat fishing.  So much to choose from!

After class sign ups, we headed to our respective cabins for cabin cleans and welcoming our new two week campers! Today is both bitter and sweet, as we say goodbye to our first batch of two-weekers and welcome our new two-weekers, who are meeting their fellow bunkmates, unpacking, and settling into their new homes. Cabins will have plenty of time for more bonding later this afternoon during cabin activities. Here’s what everyone’s up to!

Down Under will be getting down having a dance party and French Quarter will be berry hunting along the lake path. Loons and LCH will both be cooling off and having fun in the lake, while Gimme Shelter will be enjoying the outdoors on a creek walk. Shangri-La will be having a dance party and making some artwork for their cabin, while Paquatahnee will be decorating cupcakes and then creating a puppet show with their creations. Avalon will be going on a trip and dip- a hike and then a swim in the lake. Fiddler’s Green is enjoying their lunch at the lake then heading back to their cabin to hang out. Camelot is having a spa party down by the hot tub and Valhalla is taking advantage of the beautiful day on the creek walk. Treasure Island will get an adrenaline rush on Tipi Zip and Forbidden Planet will be doing a scavenger hunt across camp. Atlantis spent the afternoon at Camden State Park, enjoying a picnic lunch and hiking. Taj Mahal will be having an English tea party, complete with croquet and boce ball. Haley’s Comet is doing a workshop with Peter Boie, a magical magician who will be our evening program tonight. Can’t wait!

Before all of today’s laziness, we had an amazing sharing night yesterday. We were thoroughly entertained with our hilarious MC’s, an explorer and a narrator to voice the explorer’s expeditions. We got funky with the Latin Fusion class, Contemporary dance, and Jazz. There was lots of music with songwriting class singing an original song, guitar class who sang “I’m Yours” and Glee class sang “Stay”, not to mention a performance by the Uku-legends. There were also funny moments, with improv class, Outreach Outdoors, and creative writing making everyone laugh. All in all, it was fantastic to see all of the work that we have produced in just two short weeks. Now we’re starting fresh and I can’t wait for the next and final sharing night!

It’s time for another teen update…Alive has been busy today choosing their new classes! Among the myriad of choices are character development, music beats, acapella singing, paper lanterns, spoken word poetry, bookmaking, clay decay, mask making, and found percussive. Awesome!

We’ll be enjoying delicious pizza dinner tonight before our evening of mischief and magic with Peter Boie. Until then, we’re soaking up some rays and taking it easy on the laziest of lazy days!

Don’t forget to look below for loads of cool photos!

Forever yours,
Alleycat & Olive
