HVA on their most recent trip!

Greetings, earthlings! Olive Oyl here with some news for you! Well, it’s another exciting day of classes as we’re getting into our second set of minis and luckily avoiding the schvitz! We must be in a special schvitz bubble here at HVC because we’ve managed to get the bulk of our rain overnight and the wetness has hardly affected our daily lives. We switched our dance and movie evening programs, so that we enjoyed a warm and cozy film last night and will have our dance in two nights once the weather is drier and clearer. Perfect! We watched Despicable Me last night, and it was a hilarious and feel-good time for all. For those of our campers who were here last summer, we saw Despicable Me 2 in theaters, so this was a little flashback to fun lazy days past, but also an excellent choice for a first movie night here at camp.

Peter and Meg spoke to all of camp this morning about how it’s hard to believe that in just a week, campers will be heading home on buses or getting picked up by their folks. It’s shock for all…we can’t believe it’s all ending so soon! But, not to fret, there is still so much to come with our final time here at Hidden Valley. We’ll take care of lots of practical stuff on camp, like getting everyone’s addresses posted so that we can keep in touch throughout the year. We’ll also be handing out white books to decorate, share contact information, and memories from the summer. Peter and Meg also reminded us how at this time it’s nice to reflect on the hallmarks of our community–how well we all work together and the amazing things that we have created this summer, both tangible and intangible, like a mosaic project or a meaningful friendship.

Our final week here is going to be a blast! The day after tomorrow we have the camper vs. counselor basketball game at Interest Groups and then we’ll have a few nights of awesome performances, with Shrek the Musical, Sharing Night, and the Alive! show. We’ll also have the always-amazing Fair Day, full of delicious treats and fun games. Then, of course, the spectacular Lobster Banquet and Closing Pine Grove.

Now for our Staying Alive update…

Yesterday after the fourth day of classes, Alive got busy with show prep! Musicians, dancers, and actors practiced while helping build sets and finalize the script (sneak preview: it’s going to be wonderful). For evening program, Alive took a trip to the Monmouth theater to watch a stage production of Oscar Wilde’s “A Woman of No Importance.” All of the campers and counselors thoroughly enjoyed the show, and we’re looking forward to going back to Monmouth theater in a few days to see a different production. In the meantime, they’ll be taking some fun trips and working hard to get the show ready!

That’s all we got for you today…be sure to check out the cool photos! The light painting photos come from Shangri-La’s cabin night the other night and the photos below that are from our teen programs. Check out Adventures’ adventures and Alive’s recent Who’s Line Is It Anyway performance!

Peace and Love,

Olive

French Quarter's wacky wardrobe

French Quarter’s wacky wardrobe

Hi folks! Lady of the Lake here with a batch of news.

Yesterday at meeting, we celebrated both no mail, no meal, and aloha tuesday. For aloha tuesday, we honored one of our counselors who was wearing a spectacular tropical themed Hawaiian shirt. Our ukelele placed a lei on him and strummed a few chords.

Last night was cabin night! Each cabin participated in their own awesome night.

Avalon had an exciting egg drop from the upper carriage house. They crafted unique holdings for their eggs and then dropped them to see which strategies worked. The whole cabin had a lot of fun together.

Loons made t-shirts together. They got to decorate their shirts as they pleased, and now have a cool way to remember their cabin when they head back home in a week.

Wombles made pizza in the pizza oven, which is always a great way to spend a cabin night. They got to make their own pizzas and taste a whole number of different combinations, while spending some fun quality time together.

LCH had an egg catapult! First, though, they indulged in a delicious locally baked cake. Then, they shot eggs through Dear Meadows field using a catapult. It was the perfect combination of yummy treats and exciting activity.

Chateau Fiasco headed down the tipi zip together, all the while playing loads of other games. There was plenty of time for all the campers in the cabin to get to hang out and support each other down the zip-line.

Bermuda Triangle also did an egg drop, but from the treehouse. They, too, crafted apparatuses to carry their eggs safely to the ground. They had loads of fun both in designing and in dropping the eggs down.

Forbidden Planet also made pizza using our fantastic pizza oven. They got to experiment with all sorts of creations and then eat their amazing pies. There really is nothing better than home cooked pizza.

The Burrow had a lovely, relaxing night, drinking hot chocolate an playing various games. They all got to do a lot of hanging out and warm their stomachs simultaneously.

Down Under also made t-shirts to commemorate their time together this summer. They decorated their shirts in all different styles together, and enjoyed one another’s company.

French Quarter had a night around the campfire together. They made s’mores and had a blast together, munching on their dessert and hanging out.

Paquatahnee had a scavenger hunt around camp. Then, they got together and drank hot chocolate while making an awesome cabin banner.

Shangri-La did some light painting and then used their glowsticks to have an awesome dance party. They also munched down on some amazing cupcakes that their counselor baked for them.

Camelot baked cookies together, and while they waited for their cookies, played a rousing game of sardines.

Fiddler’s Green headed down to the lake, where they swam and made some s’mores. They enjoyed the last rays of sunshine from the day and got to splash around. Then, the treated themselves to some yummy s’mores.

Valhalla had a hot tub party, where they enjoyed the warmth of the tub and blasted some tunes. The crew had a lot of fun dancing and splashing around together.

Taj Mahal also indulged in an amazing locally baked cake, and then headed over to the pottery studio. There, they listened to some music and glazed the tiles they had previously made. When they finished, they headed outside for some basketball.

Alive spent their night playing Who’s Line is it Anyways in the Rec Hall. They had a lot of laughs as they played all together.

This morning, we woke up and participated in dress in the dark day. That’s where we all dress crazily, as if we’d gotten dressed in the dark. Check out the amazing photos of some of our wackiest outfits.

We also got to enjoy some fresh picked blueberries for breakfast today and yesterday. They came from a local farm, and a batch of them were even used to make a blueberry sauce for our pancakes. Yum!

At meeting, we had a special competition among some of the ropes staff. It’s a longstanding tradition that whoever reads the ropes staff does it quite rapidly. This morning, we had six members read the same list to see who could read it fastest. It was pretty exciting, and the winner is still contested.

We also had a special announcement from the Bermuda Triangle counselors. The four of them came up wearing various capes, and discussed the various terms for rain boots. It was a fantastic announcement that we all got a kick out of.

We’ve got some great evening programs coming up – tonight, we’ll be watching a movie, and tomorrow, we have electives. Stay tuned for more news!

Sincerely,

Lady of the Lake

HVA, Alive, and Tipis Update, plus Much More!

IMG_0658

Good morning, world! Olive Oyl here with some news for you as we continue another day of classes and fun here at HVC!

First off, we had a spectacular evening last night with Valleyfest. We had a whole variety of acts, with lots of music, with the thumb piano, the Cup Song, Rolling on a River by our AWACs, and an epic acoustic guitar rendition of Stairway to Heaven. We also had some comedy skits, like sumo wrestling. There was also some dance, ranging from contemporary to tap. After we finished up with the amazing acts, we got to hang out for a bit longer with a surprise dance!!! We jammed out to some new tunes and some classics, like Don’t Stop Believin’. Overall, it was an excellent way to end a relaxing and fun lazy day.

Our Tipis folks had an exciting day yesterday, with a trip to Acadia National Park. They climbed the Beehive trail and even ran into Peter and Meg, who were enjoying a day off. What a crazy coincidence! The group also harvested foraged food and served it for dinner, in addition to yummy pizza and ice cream. They’ve also been working on some crafts, like acorn necklaces and hallowing out their bowl and carving projects. They had an awesome day inspired by nature and we can’t wait to see what they do next!

HVA has also been off adventuring, and they just got back from their trip where they climbed Mt. Katahdin, the highest point in all of Maine. As one camper recalls, although the hike “was challenging, it was tons of fun and memory that I’ll cherish forever.” They also went to Baxter and Acadia National Park were they biked on carriage trails, which a camper describes as “gorgeous and well worth the exertion.” The same camper recounted, “Nights ’round campfire were prime time for jokes. With our stomachs full of s’mores, we would have been content to camp forever.” Sounds like everyone had an awesome time both being in nature and bonding with one another. For their next trip they’ll be going to Canada, where they’ll spend three days in Quebec, then go rafting and rock climbing. Sounds sweet and we can’t wait to hear all about it when they get back!

Now for our Stayin’ Alive! update…

Yesterday during pool activities, our Alive friends did a performance art piece based around famous villains, like Malificent and The Queen of Hearts. They did a slow-motion choreographed movement piece to epic music. It was amazing! Later on, they watched Mrs. Doubtfire to inspire method acting. For their evening program, they made sugar and chocolate bananas over a fire and played character-based improv games. They’re continuing to plan for their show, which is coming up next week. I’m sure they have some super cool ideas brewing and we can’t wait to see it all come together.

We’re eager to get back into our classes this morning and are super excited for cabin night tonight! Check back in tomorrow for all of the cabin night scoop!

So long,

Olive

All You Need to Know About the Wheel Plus Today’s Lazy Day!

Sibling floss!

Sibling floss!

Hello, folks! Olive Oyl here with your lazy day update!

Before I get started on all of today’s activities, it’s time to talk about last night’s Wheel of Misfortune! The Wheel is a twisted game show night, where campers participate in a series of challenges, in which the losing camper gets to pick a prize, where a counselor will do something special for their cabin. Every session the wheel has a different theme that the evening revolves around. Last night was the Honeymoon from Hell, where our beautiful newlyweds Katherine and Lucas went off to their honeymoon only to experience a dark and twisted resort world. Throughout the night, they met a series of crazy characters, like an especially unfriendly receptionist, a masseuse who used a fly swatter, an artist who used “bodily fluids” (ketchup of course!) as materials, and a travel blogger who kept getting pied in the face. Campers were called up by Gruesome, a mysterious and creepy-looking AWAC who selects “victims” to participate in the games. The games were all part of the plot to help out Katie and Luke who were facing a whole bunch of problems on their romantic journey. Some of the challenges were classics like the sibling floss, card game of spit, and eating the poopy diaper. There was also searching for the room key in manure, green goop facials, and t-shirt unfreezing. The night concluded with some fire, with the horrible secretary getting her hair lit on fire and Katherine seeking revenge on her husband by shooting a flaming arrow at him. Check out the photos to see all the Wheel madness! It was a crazy and incredible night and another Wheel that will go down in history in the HVC books.

After a good night’s sleep, today got off to a wonderful start with delicious, fresh-baked chocolate chip muffins for breakfast. Plus some eggs, fresh fruit, and our usual cereal, toast, and juice. The older half then headed off for a relaxing day at nearby Lake St. George. They hung out in the water, caught up on some reading, played magic and card games, and enjoyed a delicious picnic lunch. We then headed back to camp for an extra long rest period and super cabin clean.

Meanwhile, the younger half was on camp for Gross Day! We had a bunch of slightly messy and very fun activities going on like the Gross Obstacle Course and the Dunk Tank. We also had Paint Twister, Shaving Cream Hairdos, the Mud Pit and the Slip N Slide. There were non-gross options for our clean friends, over at Tranquility by the Willow Tree, where campers enjoyed friendship bracelets, cards, and hanging out. The younger had rest period and then headed over to the pool for Pool Activities! We got a chance to cool off in the pool, play frisbee, jam on instruments, and just relax.

Younger half and older half have been reunited for a yummy pizza dinner, with flavors like Hawaiian, Bacon Blue Cheese, Pepperoni, and Feta, Spinach, and Greek Olive. After filling up on pizza goodness, we’ll head over to the gazebo for a beautiful outdoor Valleyfest! Valleyfest is our camper talent show, and we’re surely see lots of amazing music, comedy, and dance. Can’t wait!

Be sure to check out all the cool photos from the Wheel plus from Gross Day and the Lake!

Ta-ta for now,

Olive

Proposals, a Wedding… Mystery is in the Air!

Sunday, August 10th, 2014
Fun with goop!

Fun with goop!

Hi folks!

There’s mystery in the air, that’s for sure! Last night’s meeting was full of surprises. In the middle of meeting, as announcements were carrying on as usual, one of our counselors stood up and made a shocking announcement: he asked another counselor to marry him! Bridesmaids surrounded the soon to be bride, giggling and beginning wedding planning. The camp was left completely stunned. They could tell it was some kind of theatrical performance and not actually a real proposal… but they couldn’t figure out what it was for…

We resumed normal meeting activities until Peter announced that it was time to eat some baby food! As per camp tradition, Peter selected lucky volunteers of campers, AWACs, and counselors from the crowd to taste some delectable baby food. Prime flavors included ham and ham gravy, prunes, and lasagna and meat sauce dinner. Blindfolded participants tried to guess the flavor they were eating while the audience looked on in a combination of intrigue and utter disgust. Some volunteers were fortunate enough to get an extra helping of baby food – either through a large spoon, a bucket poured on their head, or in the case of one staff member, a tractor dumping of a jelly goop concoction. Yuck!

After that appetizing end to meeting, we all headed off to our real dinner. Let me tell you, we all enjoyed the taste of that meal a whole lot more. We had an amazingly cooked and savory Mediterranean chicken, with olives, cheese, and sun-dried tomatoes. To complement the chicken, we had fresh greens and delicious cheesy, buttery scalloped potatoes. For dessert, we had unbelievable raspberry rhubarb oatmeal bars.

Post dinner, cabins headed off in separate directions. The youngest cabins participated in Candy Crush, where they worked to find colorful balls hidden all around camp. They faced challengers that made them do all sorts of crazy things. The campers were working to save Grandma Nut, who was facing deep competition from Lord Liquorish. Lord Liquorish was plotting to steal all of Grandma Nut’s candy! The Lord also had oompa loompas, in the form of AWACs, who also worked to take the balls away. It was an exciting night of working to help out Grandma Nut!

Meanwhile, the middle girls had a Newspaper Fashion Show! The kids worked to make a costume for one of their counselors or AWACs out of just newspaper and tape. When the designing and creating was complete, the cabins gathered in the Rec Hall for an exciting fashion show, complete with fabulous music and strutting.

The middle boys cabins, Lower Carriage House and Chateau Fiasco, headed out to Belfast for a surprise Candlepin Bowling trip! The crew had a fantastic time showing off their bowling skills.

Finally, the oldest four cabins headed up to our Blodgett House to have a teen party. Blodgett is about a mile down camp road and is where the campers and counselors in our Community program lived last session. There, they got ice cream with great toppings, like sprinkles, chocolate sauce, nuts, and strawberry sauce. The campers spent the evening relaxing and hanging out. There were intense games of soccer and frisbee, rousing games of banana grams, and a lot of fun had by all. At the end of their evening Carrick, one of the counselors who ran the Community teen program last year, spoke with the group about the program and encouraged them to think about it as an option for next year or the year after. Then the crew walked the trail back to camp, and joined the rest of camp in snuggling into bed.

This beautiful morning, we were all greeted by the traditional Bagel Sunday, and more mysterious occurrences. At meeting this morning, we witnessed the “wedding” of the two counselors who supposedly got engaged last night. The bride wore a stunning wedding dress, and the groom was all cleaned up for the occasion. The two drove the ladybug golf cart off into the sunset for their honeymoon. Rumor has it that this all has to do with the Wheel of Misfortune, coming tonight. Word on the street is that the theme of the Wheel is Honeymoon from Hell…

We’ll definitely have to stay alert for what happens tonight!

Truly,

Lady of the Lake

Hi, friends! Olive Oyl here with your daily dose of Hidden Valley news!

Well, we had a fantastic evening last night with some superb electives! We had a whole variety of activities going on, like our classics of Capture the Flag, Dance Party, Tipi Zip, and the Pizza Oven. We had some other yummy treats happening, like a Wee Bite of Scotland, where they made tablet and shortbread, and s’mores and charades in the Barn Library. Some folks got in touch with their artsy side, doing sandblasting, light painting, henna and tie-dye, screen printing, or making polymer clay charms. We also had our fabulous Spontaneous Parade, where campers traveled around with instruments galore to bring some music and silliness to the rest of camp. We also had a nature walk down by the creek, a sing-a-long, and Hocus Pocus fortune telling. At the end of the night we all gathered in the Rec Hall to share about the awesome things we had just done! We then sang some camp classics, thanks to the help of our dear friend Peri! We all joined in for Inch by Inch and a song by Pete Seeger. Overall, it was a lovely evening full of good times and music!

The excitement didn’t stop this morning as 44 of our campers participated in the Montville Road Race. These special folks had an early breakfast and missed their first period, but are now back on camp, where they have the chance to shower and have a mid-morning snack of coffee cake and oranges. Yum! The race always draws a big HVC crowd, and many of our own placed high in their division. It was a two mile, downhill race and participants were divided into different groups based on their age. The money from the race will be donated to the Montville Volunteer Fire Department, so campers are not only doing something fun, but doing something amazing for their local camp community.

Our Brumby girls got a special treat yesterday with a visit from Janelle, a camp mom and a horse vet. She taught the girls about horses from the veterinarian perspective, explaining anatomy using old dried horse bones. How cool! Be sure to check out the photos.

Tonight is sure to be another exciting evening, with three different activities going on for different parts of camp. Our youngest cabins will be participating in Candy Crush, while the middle girls will be doing the Newspaper Fashion Show and the middle boys are going on a mystery trip, and lastly, the oldest cabins will be going to a Teen Party at Blodgett House. More details to come tomorrow!

That’s all for now, folks!

Sincerely,

Olive

Cabin Activities and Kim and Reggie!

Friday, August 8th, 2014

IMG_1080

Hey guys!

Lady of the Lake here with the second batch of Lazy Day news!

After pool activities and lunch yesterday, each cabin participated in an awesome cabin activity. Many cabins did art projects – Avalon did glass fusing, Forbidden Planet created a Clay Fire City (where they made a giant model city out of clay and then fired it in an outside kiln!), the Burrow tie dyed, French Quarter did screen printing, Paquatahnee did HVC t-shirt design, Shangri-La (after an awesome Kim and Reggie workshop!) did yarn bracelets, and Camelot (also after a workshop) had fun with clay in a clay pictionary tournament.

Other cabins participated in active activities. Loons headed down to our junk yard, called The End of the World, and worked on explosions. Wombles was also down there, working on a super secret stealth mission. Lower Carriage House headed to the lake for a dip and sauna. How fun! Chateau Fiasco went on a hike, and Down Under headed down the tipi zip-line and made some s’mores. Valhalla also went down the tipi-zip, after a very exciting tractor ride. Taj Mahal did a scavenger hunt that resulted in them getting their very own Taj shirts! And finally, Fiddler’s Green took an awesome adventure into Belfast for some ice cream. Yum!

Meanwhile yesterday, our Brumby campers took a day trip to Islesboro, where they visited an amazing horse barn and took an exciting lesson from Barton Patrick, who helps at our stable and owns the Islesboro barn. Islesboro is an incredibly beautiful island off the coast of Maine. After their lesson and touring the facilities, the group headed out for some ice cream.

Yesterday night, with everyone back on camp, we had the ever exciting Kim and Reggie! Kim and Reggie have been coming to Hidden Valley for years and years are a massive hit with everyone on camp. They sing a range of songs, from Pete Seeger classics to original songs that they’ve written. Kim and Reggie are great at getting everyone off their feet and grooving! Make sure to check out the awesome pictures from last night.

Today, we woke up to an amazing breakfast. We were all so excited because not only were there eggs, but there was also bacon! And delicious tofu sausages for the vegetarians. In fact, breakfast was so exciting that our Spirit Animal of the Day was bacon! For those of you who may not know, campers from Chateau Fiasco end morning meeting each day with a little skit that exemplifies some camp related topic.

Today, campers are headed off to their new sets of classes. We’re showing our new two weekers the ropes, and everyone has been so inclusive. It’s bound to be an awesome rest of the session!

And now, for a quick update about Alive! On Thursday, August 7th, the Alive! program had a “Found Art” day which involved a “What is Art” discussion the night before, and a trip into Liberty, ME on Thursday. The group visited a vintage tool shop in Liberty and were given the opportunity to choose a few things to build an art piece around. When they arrived back at camp, the campers took their item(s) and designed an art project, and then spent the afternoon executing it! The day ended with a viewing of the documentary, “Wasteland,” which is about an artist creating portraits out of recyclable materials from a landfill. Now the group starts their second two weeks of classes and prepares for tonight’s trip to the Bates Dance Festival!

Until later,

Lady of the Lake

The Laziest of Lazy Days and More!

IMG_0179

Hi folks!

Lady of the Lake here, with lots of exciting news! It all started at evening meeting last night, when we honored a very special group of campers – our five year campers! These kids have been coming to camp summer after summer, and last night each one received their five year vest.

After the meeting, we all headed in for a great meal of sizzling hamburgers, veggie burgers (I still hold that these are the best in the world), fries, and a beautiful, fresh salad. After that feast, we headed to the Rec Hall for sharing night, where we got to see all the performances that campers have been working on in their classes for the past two weeks.

Our first act was very mysterious – while the emcees were beginning the show, Tribal stormed the stage and kidnapped one of the emcees! Tribal, one of our classes, has been up to lots of similar shenanigans over the past eight class days. They’ve shown up at different classes and interacted with the rest of camp in very silly fashions.

After Tribal, gymnastics took the stage tumbling and leaping all over. They sure were a crowd pleaser! We had equally active performances from aerobics and yoga, too. Our guitar class played “I’m Yours,” by Jason Mraz, and our ukelele class played “Wagon Wheel,” by the Old Crow Medicine Show. Both were crowd pleasers and folks all around the room sang along. Tipis came up and shared a song with us all. We had a fantastic performance by our Stomp class, which has been working on making music out of everyday items. They performed a scene at a restaurant for us, and were using dishes, silverware, and of course their bodies, to make awesome beats.

We saw an extremely zany performance from the Frankenstein Doll Making class, where members of the class showed off their creations in a Frankenstein take on the traditional beauty pageant. Audience members cheered and hooted for the dolls they fancied, and the counselor teaching the class read a funny blurb about each doll.

Our Sound Escape class gave us a truly noteworthy performance. They started out by looping a series of creepy sounds. We couldn’t see the campers from the class, and the Rec Hall was dark and silent except for the repetitive shrieks and cries. After we were all sufficiently scared out of our seats, the class changed the tone of the night entirely and looped various wakeup noises of the inner city. Campers yelled out phrases like taxi, hotdogs for sail, and the whaling of an ambulance. The whole thing was phenomenal to watch.

We also heard a preview of the musical last night, which will be performed in the upcoming weeks. Our musical this year is Shrek, so the talented singers performed a parody to the song “Fancy.” Their creative lyrics were hysterically funny, and their voices were lovely to listen to.

Our modern dance class, our final act, showed us an incredible performance. They hung sheets across the stage, turned off the lights, and then danced behind the sheets. The audience saw their shadows as they performed an old Native American tale. It was both graceful and innovative.

The end of Sharing Night was not the end of the night, however. As our program directors came up to announce bedtime, music blared through the sound system. We were having a secret dance! We all boogied along to awesome tunes. No one could resist the contagious music. When we were all tuckered out, the PDs announced the real bedtime and we all headed to cozy up in our beds.

After a fulfilling night of sleep, we woke up this morning to have the laziest of lazy days – otherwise known as Pajama Day. Folks headed to breakfast in their pajamas, and after a brief morning meeting, we all headed to have a super exciting morning of pool activities. So many activities went on, like capture the flag, slip-n-sliding, swimming, friendship bracelet making, and strumming guitars. It was a perfectly relaxing morning. While pool activities went on, a few cabins at a time went to pick up a Hidden Valley t-shirt, grab a book, and sign up for new classes for the next two weeks.

Speaking of new classes, we have some fantastic new choices for the rest of the session. Some of them are takes on other classes we have, like Extreme Llama Care. Extreme Llama Care will be going on extreme hikes and even taking an awesome trip to an alpaca farm! We also have some awesome art classes happening these two weeks, such as cartooning, collage, origami, vejigante mask making (Caribbean carnival masks), and watercolor painting. All those classes are sure to produce a lot of awesome artwork!

For new dance classes, we have a dance to the music class and a Swing Salsa class. Swing Salsa? It’s a combination of salsa dancing and swing dancing! Who knows what folks in that class will put together. We also have the return of Zumba from first session, which is sure to be a big hit, for the campers in the class and for all of us at the next Sharing Night. Another combo class we have is Fused Mosaics, where campers will be fusing mosaics – how cool!

We have a number of appetizing cooking classes coming up, too. There’s a crazy cakes class, where campers will make a different type of cupcake everyday. There’s also chip and dip, where campers will make delicious dips for their chips. Finally, there’s a “Starbucks” class, where folks will make thirst quenching coffee-free drinks to guzzle.

Other new classes we have are a meditation class, a spoken word class, songwriting, and an HVC songbook class, where campers will compile a list of Hidden Valley campfire classics. We can’t wait to see the product of their efforts!

We have some pretty out there new classes, too. We have an Apocalypse Now class, where kids will prepare for an imminent apocalypse. Their strength and bravery will be put to the test in this class! There’s also Aussie Invasion, where campers will learn just what it takes to be an Australian from two of our own Australian counselors. And lastly, we have the ever popular Liquid Smoke from last session, where campers will complete all sorts of strange puzzles in the hopes of discovering the true meaning of the class. Stay tuned for more class updates over the coming weeks!

After lunch and class signups, we’ve had a relaxing afternoon cleaning the cabin, participating in fun cabin activities, and watching some videos from our video classes. We can’t wait for Kim and Reggie, the evening program tonight! More news on the afternoon and evening to come tomorrow.

That’s all for now, folks!

BAZZINGA – Full of Surprises!

Camelot enjoying Quidditch!

Camelot enjoying Quidditch!

Hey guys!

Lady of the Lake here, but first a message from Peter and Meg:

Reading the blog, you are now aware of the tremendous effort that staff put into community activities at HVC. These events are fabulous and fun, nearly impossible to produce outside the world of camp, and – in the absence of the “color war” activities at more traditional camps – enhance our efforts to create a meaningful, positive group life here. We have long believed that these positive community experiences – taken back in to the “real world” – are an ideal for young people to aspire to in their daily lives.

Even more importantly, we see so much individual growth here. Some campers are spending their 6th or 7th summers at HVC and not only are they taller, but these children have truly become themselves, making contributions all over camp, aging as role models and demonstrating that values of love, friendship and mutual support can truly be brought to life. And our brave new campers have shown that they too can make contributions – as together we build “family” life in the cabins, learn skills all over, etc. – while establishing creative independent indentures away from home.

So, there you have it … Independence and Interdependence, both at once! Our thanks go out to counselors and instructors who have set the stage odor so much success. And hats off to our campers, a truly generous, comfortable and open-minded group, always thinking outside the box, but too far! – MEG & PETER

Well, there you have it – this is a pretty great place to spend a summer. Yesterday, we had Bazzinga! At meeting, Peter had all the campers close their eyes. When they opened them, each cabin had new counselors! Kids ate with those counselors and then participated in fun evening programs with them! It was completely exciting for both campers and counselors alike.

Four different evening programs took place last night. The youngest cabins took part in a staff hunt, where they searched for hidden and camouflaged counselors. The middle girls cabins played Cascade. Cascade is played in the pool, which is divided length wise. Hundreds of colorful balls are poured into the water, and then teams compete to eliminate the balls from their side. It’s a great way to splash around in the pool and have some fun. The oldest girls played quidditch on the soccer field. Cabins painted themselves to represent their different teams and had a blast playing the fantastic game. The oldest boys had an active night as well, as they played a rousing game of man hunt.

After we gathered in the Rec Hall, Peter had the campers close their eyes once more. Counselors headed back to their original cabins, and soon order was restored. Then we all joined in on loads of camp-fire classics. We sang call and response songs, rounds, and active songs.

When we were dismissed for bed, no one headed back to their cabins. Instead, we all headed to Deer Meadows field, where we were surprised with Fireworks! We saw all sorts of incredible light displays – bright colors, fizzling fireworks, fireworks that changed as they made their way through the sky – it was truly fantastic. It really was a highlight of the summer.

The surprises kept coming this morning. It was french toast day! We’ve been eagerly waiting for french toast day all summer. In fact, we have not had french toast once this summer, including first session. But this morning, low and behold, there was french toast! For toppings, we got to lather on whipped cream, a strawberry rhubarb sauce, and of course syrup. One of our counselors, Jenny, even has a french toast shirt, and of course she wore it this morning. All of camp is just in the best of moods after that incredible wake-up!

Well, that’s the news for now.

Peace out,

Hi, friends! Special Reporter Olive Oyl here with your update as we embark on another fabulous day of classes!

First off, we have a lot to fill you in on about our amazing teen programs! HVA came back from their trip on the St. Croix river two days ago and had a lot to report back to main camp. One camper recounted:

“The canoe trip was one of the coolest things I have done in a very long time. Not only did I push myself physically and emotionally, I formed a bond of friendship with my fellow HVA campers that I consider to be incredibly pertinent to the trip as a whole. It was moving, hilarious, difficult, and ultimately rewarding. I am having a great time and can’t wait for the next trip.”

These sentiments were shared among all the HVA-ers, who are enjoying a few days back at Hidden Valley before leave for their next journey to Baxter and Acadia State Park. They accomplished so much on their last trip on the St. Croix, like paddling over 60 miles, spotting ten bald eagles, and seeing the U.S. on the right side of the bank and Canada on the left bank. They were gone for seven days and experienced amazing weather, with a little bit of schvitz only on the first day. They also sailed across the Spednic Lake, using only a tarp and two branches. Sounds like an incredible time! When they got back to camp they joined our other teen program, Alive! for a contra dance with a live band. We were happy to have them back at camp for a few days, but are super excited to hear about their next voyage! Be sure to check out the beautiful photos from their trip.

Alive! has also been having a ton of fun lately. Their evening program last night was the first ever Murder Mystery dinner party. Campers spent the day prepping for the event by watching the movie Clue, playing improv games, and decorating the red and white tent outside Wabanaki. All of the preparation led to the dinner party where the campers role played as their designated characters and worked on decoding clues. Overall, the lazy day was a huge success and Alive is looking forward to continuing this awesome activity in future sessions!

Today we continue on with our penultimate day of classes. We’re getting ready for Sharing Night, where we’ll see music, dance, and tons of other assorted performances tomorrow night. Time has just flown by! Today is an extra special class day because it’s both Aloha Tuesday and PK Shirt Day. On Tuesdays, in the traditional Hawaiian spirit, we honor a special tropically-dressed counselor with a lay and sweet ukulele music. This Tuesday is also PK shirt day, where we honor our favorite boss, Peter, by sporting his usual garb of patterned, button-up shirts.

Quick backtrack to yesterday…our movie night was a blast! We watched Freaky Friday, which brought a ton of laughs and good times to the Rec Hall. We then all headed back to our cabins for a good night’s sleep after a busy lazy day. Tonight’s evening program is Bazzinga, our awesome mystery program. For those of you who do know, I’m sure you can’t wait, and for those of you who don’t know, more details to come tomorrow!

Until then,

Olive
