A Little Bit About HVC’s Llamas

Maybe you have an HVC sticker or  t-shirt or  sweatshirt with a llama on it. Maybe you’ve taken a llama care class. Maybe you’ve just walked by the llama pen. No matter your degree of llama engagement, every member of the HVC community has some connection to HVC’s llamas. Here’s a bit about each of our long-necked, spitting, furry friends.

Otis - The Security Guard

Otis is a special case because at one point, Otis was not allowed to live in the llama pen. Let’s just say, they didn’t get along. So, for a period, Otis lived with the donkeys in the animal pen. He spent years in the animal pen. It was in the animal pen that Otis found his rock… his famous rock. The flat rock in the animal pen became known as Otis’ throne. He was the guard of the donkeys. Perhaps in another life, Otis had a career as a Security Guard. But eventually, Otis’ residence in the animal pen made it difficult to do vet visits and he was moved back to the llama pen. Being the celebrity that he is, Otis has played roles in camp politics. For example, his presidential campaign. His tag line was unforgettable: Otis for POTUS! If you’re in camp, you won’t have trouble spotting this guy, just look for his beautiful dark brown fur!

Stanley - Furry and Funny

Next up, we’ve got Stanley. At first glance, one might think Stanley is a little funny looking. Perhaps he looks overweight, but he’s not. The mixture of Stanley’s thick, luscious fur and the fact that he is a miniature llama makes him look a little different from the other llamas. Stanley is not a controversial character. He is pretty tame and makes for a great llama to hang with in a llama care class. During class, campers love to brush Stanley’s fur because there is just so much of it.

Joe Dumars - Long Walks in the Valley

Joe loves a long walk! Not that the other llamas don’t like to take a walk around camp, but Joe definitely loves to walk. Sometimes the llama hierarchy can be hard to gauge because it changes periodically, but in general, Joe runs the show. Joe’s fur is a unique mix of different shades of brown. He truly is a beautiful llama.

Simon + Garfunkel – A Pair

Simon and Garfunkel came to HVC from the same farm. And that’s their thing, they come as a pair. Like campers who meet on the bus on their way to camp, they came together and they bonded. They are a couple of spirited and energetic fellas. Simon and Garfunkel love to jump and run. Jumping, running, frolicking, or as we like to say at HVC: garfunkeling. If you ever have trouble telling these two apart, Simon has some black fur around his eye.

Alpacas: Little Joe + Pippen

Though we call it the llama pen, HVC’s llama’s share their living quarters with HVC’s alpacas! These guys are wild and crazy! Nevertheless, we love them. But, perhaps not as much as they love to eat! We’re going to give them lots of love and walks this summer and perhaps we’ll tame their wild spirits…but not too much.
