New HVC Sign In Progress

Hello and happy spring to all HVCers!

Reporting with exciting news from the world of HVC signage. In our artsy manner, signs made by campers, counselors, and staff can be seen on almost every building on camp. With this blog post, we excitedly announce the new HVC sign! Here is a peek into the process of making the sign. A key idea is that everything is being made on site!

  • All of the wood used for the sign were local trees that fell down during winter. Some of HVC’s year round staff collected and milled those fallen trees. At HVC, we have an Advanced Glass Beads class. While Advanced Glass Beads is HVC’s only real advanced class, this project could be considered an Advanced Woodworking class. Check out the beginning stages on the process and snow-covered camp.

  • Another element of the sign is the HVC lettering. The HVC lettering was cut and painted on camp as seen in the pictures below.

  • The sign was designed by April and Carmi. More specifically, Carmi designed the mosaic element. Much like the HVC lettering, there are multiple steps to making a mosaic. The following images highlight the steps from choosing the colors of the glass to cutting and arranging the pieces. Does this process look familiar to anyone who has taken a cold glass class?

  • Everyone on camp is pitching in! All of our year round staff and camp residents are helping bring the sign to life.

Challenge: Can you identify the locations on camp in the pictures?

  • Most of the pictures capture work done in the Dining Hall. Why the dining hall? The Dining Hall is one of few heated buildings on camp, so many winter jobs are done in the Dining Hall.

The sign will be up by summer. Get excited to see it up close. Stay tuned for the final product!
