February Spotlight: Camper vs. Counselor Tradition
Though HVC isn’t known to a have particularly competitive spirit, camp comes together to support or play in two camper vs. counselor games per session. The first game is the SOCCER GAME and the second is the BASKETBALL GAME!
The Camper Team
The Camper Team practices during a class period for the entire four weeks of the session! Over the four weeks, campers and coaches work on their skill and bond as a team. They also design their very own jerseys! Because the campers practice on the same court they play on, you could consider them the home team.
The Counselor Team
Don’t be deceived by the team’s name… actually any staff member on camp can sign up to join the team! Though they may have size advantage, the game is the first time the team ever plays together. They might not have a uniform, but they bring an unmatchable energy.
THE SOCCER GAME
The day of the Soccer Game is arguably the most exciting Interests Group of each session. Not only is there a special snack: hot dogs, all of the Interest Group activities are moved to and around the soccer field. From sign making to cheering to a tetherball on the sidelines, you can certainly feel the fun and the support on the field.
There is a tradition that on the night of the Soccer Game, the Guru shared at evening meeting is “Campers always win.” Do you believe it? Do the campers always win? Have you ever witnessed a game in which the counselors win?
THE BASKETBALL GAME
The Basketball Game takes place the morning of Fair Day. Some of our sportsiest HVCers even double up their atheletics on Fair Day by running in the Fair Day Road Race and playing in the Basketball Game! Because this game takes place close to the end of the session, the crowd is full people signing each others’ Whitebooks and relishing in one of our final moments all together. The perfect reward for a well played game is a trip down the Fair Day inflatable water slide or to the dunk tank to cool off.
