What time is it? PJ time!

Peter here as our correspondents have a busy day, even though at HVC today is the “Laziest Lazy Day of them All.” Photos here will show you PJ-clad campers enjoying the day between the two rounds of classes this session.
In addition to choosing classes this morning, campers will receive an HVC T-shirt and enjoy the book fair. The day is rounded out with time by the pool for all, a cabin activity and a movie. Detailstonight right here. Stay tuned!
Meg and I want to take a minute to honor the Program Directors (PD’s) who work with us and thank them for some remarkable programming of late. A lot of work takes place behind the scenes to successfully produce programs such as Sharing Night with its 19 artistic acts last night. PD’s have also arranged a special trip for our advanced horse riders today as well and our Shakespeare group is attending a local production of “A Midsummer’s Night Dream.”
And all of these special events – yesterday’s rock concert at lunch, a surprise dance recently, our fireworks, group singing before meals, etc. – are part of a creative, meaningful and celebrative community experience for all of us, children and adults alike.
As we reach the midway point of this session, we are tremendously proud of many accomplishments here. Friendships have developed, skills discovered and honed… Just as important, children have come to value the benefits of camp community life. Many thanks for your support in this process.
All the best,
Peter and Meg

Howdy, folks!! Humming Bird here in the late night to bring you a special report on Sharing Night!!

We had some incredible performances tonight by our first two weeks of classes! We had singing and dancing and acting and art-ing, and more!! And the night was led by none other than our fearless infomercial MCs, who told us how we could get all the skillz our campers demonstrated for us, for just 3 easy payments of $19.99!! Check out some photos below of our wonderful acts!

Included in these photos are pictures of the beautiful performances given this afternoon by our Rock Band classes! You’ll also find below pictures of brief demonstrations given by our Alive campers of their hard work these past two weeks! Alive gave a mini concert after Rock Band earlier this afternoon, some other campers gave a STOMP performance (on a set they built themselves!!), and still others presented for us a dramatic scene from Beauty and the Beast! The performances were just a taste of what is to come during this year’s Alive Show, which we’ll get to watch later on in the session!

After Sharing Night tonight we enjoyed some incredible FIREWORKS!!! Second Session campers get to see a beautiful display of fireworks every year, and this year’s set was just spectacular!! Cat Nap and I had jaws on the ground, it was THAT wonderful!! Check out the pictures below!!

Tomorrow is the SUPEREST LAZY DAY OF ALL LAZY DAYS!! It’s also PAJAMA DAY! What is all this madness???? I’ll tell you!! On this day, smack dab in the middle of the session, the entire camp gets one big, gigantic lazy day!! On this magical day, we can stay in our jammies as we sign up for our second round of classes, laze around by the pool, and enjoy cabin day activities!! It’s like cabin night… except in the daytime!! Cabin activities will be as follows….

Avalon will make some pizza!
Loons is going to the lake and making s’mores!
LCH will take a creek walk and make some s’mores!
Chateau Fiasco will play with the catapult and make s’mores!
Atlantis will complete their zen garden!
Forbidden Planet will launch the rafts they made at the last cabin night!
Wombles will play with the animals!
Down Under will have a twister tournament and a dance party!
French Quarter is making terrariums!
Paquatahnee will be tie dying shirts!
Shangri-La will make cookies and have a dance party!
Camelot is going to bake in the barn kitchen!
Fiddlers Green will play trust games and hang around on the ropes course! (Geddit??)
Valhalla will tie dye shirts!
Taj Mahal will make a paper mache a taco!
Gimme Shelter will do the tipi zipline!

Our counselors have some awesome activities planned for our wonderful campers, and we can’t wait to share photos of all the cabin bonding tomorrow, so stay tuned!!

I’m off to pick out the perfect PJ’s for tomorrow!!

Always humming along,

Get up, get up and greet the beautiful day!!! (That’s how we woke our campers up this morning!) Humming Bird and Cat Nap here!

Evening Meeting last night held a few surprises for us… The first was the rebranding of an age old tradition we have here at Hidden Valley. Every Tuesday we have a tradition of what was known as “No Mail, No Meal,” the premise of which was that campers use a letter that they’ve written home as a ticket in to dinner. But for those campers who may have forgotten to write a letter home, never fear! We provide postcards and stamps at the door! The announcement of No Mail, No Meal was passed from generation to generation of the Durrett family, who have been a constant here at camp for years! This new generation of Durretts, 4 campers here this year, have helped the camp rebrand the tradition, which will henceforth be known as “Dinner’s Better With a Letter!!!” We look forward to observing this new weekly camp celebration!! And in other news……….

A mysterious occurrence occurred last night… At Evening Meeting, Peter had the non-counselors close their eyes, and when he allowed everyone to open them, somehow, all our counselors had been swapped around and changed!! Counselors of all age groups had been scrambled and nothing was as it had been before!!! It could only mean one thing… BAZZINGA WAS UPON US!!! Cabins ate dinner with their new counselors, and then went on to play games like ManHunt, Cascade, Quidditch and Capture the Flag, or making beautiful outfits out of newspaper!!

At the end of evening program we all gathered back in the Rec Hall to watch the Newspaper Fashion Show, which included some FAAAAABULOUS creations executed only by the freshest up and coming designers, who go by the names of French Quarter, Paquatahnee, Fiddlers Green, Wombles and Down Under! Catch them in Milan Fashion Week!! Or catch them in the photos below! You’ll be able to say you knew them before they were cool!!

After the show, our counselors mysteriously returned themselves to their original cabins, and were greeted by cheers and hugs by their campers!! We settled down to hear our bedtime for the night, but wait–– what’s this?? Music?? A SURPRISE DANCE!!! We celebrated the return of our normal counselors, and the fun time we shared with our Bazzinga counselors, and jammed out to Build Me Up Buttercup, and of course, the classic Don’t Stop Believing!!

It was a beautiful evening, and the fun doesn’t stop there!! Tonight we have SHARING NIGHT!! All our classes that have been working so hard for the last two weeks will get to show off all their efforts in one stupendous show!! Well, actually… in three stupendous shows!! Rock Band and Alive will be showing us their hard work today during lunch and dinner, respectively!! Look out for some pictures of our talented campers, coming soon!!

We’re off to get our dancing shoes ready for sharing night!!

Good mooooooorning!! Humming Bird and Cat Nap here! We didn’t get enough of Kim and Reggie last night, so they gave us a special performance this morning during our Meeting as well! LCH helped them sing some fan favorites like I knows it and Follow the Drinking Gourd! Thank you, Kim and Reggie for getting our day started off right!!

TONIGHT IS BAZZINGA!!!!!!!!!!!! “Need I bother to ask what that is, Humming Bird??” No! You need not ask! I’ll tell you!! Bazzinga is an evening program of pure madness and shenanigans, where OUR COUNSELORS GET SCRAMBLED AROUND!! Cabins get a new set of counselors, starting at Evening Meeting. These counselors stay with their new cabins for the night, and engage in different activities! For example, some cabins will be playing Quidditch, some will play Cascade in the pool, there will be some Capture the Flag action, some cabins will play ManHunt, and still others will put on a Newspaper Fashion Show! It’s sure to be a super fun night, and Cat Nap and I can’t wait to report back on it!

Until then, enjoy this blurb from the counselors of our Hidden Valley Adventures program!! Our adventurers got back a few days ago from their wild journey, and as we speak they are about to embark on a second one!! Here is what their counselors, Sarah and Paul, sent to the parents of our teen program campers!!

Spednic Lake and St.Croix River

It feels like just yesterday we were loading six eager teenagers into the van to head to Northern Maine for our first real adventure. The setting: Spednic Lake and the St.Croix River. The mode of transportation: loaded down canoes. The level of excitement: off the charts.

First, we met up with our guide Steve before heading to our put in point at Spednic. We spent the first couple days learning to paddle and maneuver our crafts in anticipation of the white water that awaited us on the river. We got to the river on the second afternoon and it wasn’t long before our skills were tested with sleepers (hidden rocks that will grab your boat and not let go) and a tasting of white water. Over the next few days we braved Little Falls, zigged and zagged through mile long white water and jumped in swimming holes to stay cool. The weather held out for six of the seven days with the only weather coming in on our last afternoon out.

The kids are filled with stories of the times they nearly capsized (and whose fault that may or may not have been) the tort raptor and the endless pot of beans that needed to be consumed. Though the stories may seem silly, it shows that they are comfortable enough to be silly and work hard at the same time.

It was absolutely wonderful watching the group learn the skills necessary to function in the wilderness. Everyone learned how to chop wood and build a fire as well as cook tasty food for an entire group. Through the gaining of these new skills the group really came together as a unit to perform all the tasks and had a blast doing it. Adventures aren’t the easiest thing to transition to but the group is really doing great. Everyone is picking up skills quickly and becoming great adventurers. We are all excited to see what our next trip into the White Mountains holds for us.

Until then remember… Adventure is out there!

Well there you have it, folks!! Sounds like a pretty cool program! Stay tuned for more news on their progress and adventures!! Also tune in tomorrow for photos of Bazzinga!!

Cat Nap and I have to go ask Adventures for some survival skills before they head out!! Wish us luck!

Opposite Day AND The Bangor State Fair!

Monday, August 3rd, 2015

unnamed-2

Hello, Kittens! Cat Nap here to report on today’s Lazy Day Festivities! Camp started the day with a late wake up, then headed over to the dining hall for a delicious breakfast (banana bread included! YUM!)! Soon afterwards, Cabin groups headed back to their cabins for a Super Cabin Cleanup so they would pass Cabin Inspections! After the floors were swept and the bunks were cleaned, we all went to the pool for Pool Activities.

Even I, a fluffy house cat, enjoyed a dip in the pool on this extremely hot day. As Pool Activities came to a close, we all grabbed a yummy lunch in the dining all, then Older Half and Younger Half went their separate ways (only for a little while, don’t worry!)

While Younger Half stayed on camp for “Opposite Day”, the Older Half went to the Bangor State Fair. Younger Half had a BLAST going on a slip and slide, backwards basketball (getting the ball through the hoop through the bottom of the net), backwards obstacle course, and “people care” instead of animal care (my personal favorite hehe).

BUT lets not forget about the Older Half’s trip to the Fair! We all arrived with excitement to get on some rides and empty bellies wanting to be filled with fried dough! We tackled the tilt-a-whirl, the “fireball”, the Ferris Wheel, and some of us even won some prices at booths! But of course we soon got tired and decided that going back to camp for some pizza dinner wouldn’t be such a bad idea 🙂

Once we arrived back on camp we got together for morning meeting, followed by dinner (PIZZA YAY!!!!), and the best part of the day….KIM AND REGGIE ARE HERE FOR EVENING PROGRAM!!! Check out some pictures below from today’s amazing activities (more to come tomorrow :))! Humming Bird and I gotta go trampin’ with Kim, Reggie, and the rest of camp!

Have a purr-fecf evening!

Cabin Night is an evening program dedicated to spending time as a cabin. So instead of coming together as a whole camp like we did the night before for the Staff Talent Show, each cabin branches off to have their own magical night that their counselors created for them! Look below for some pictures from tonight! AND check in tomorrow for an update on our Lazy Day AND Trip Lazy Day activities (Younger Half has “Opposite Day” and Older Half goes to the Bangor State Fair!), AND on top of all of that, Kim and Reggie are coming tomorrow!

Staff Talent! Junk Food! ICE CREAM!!! (And more!)

Camelot loves their sundaes!!

Hello, humans!! Humming Bird and Cat Nap here with more SUPER FUN UPDATES ABOUT CAMP on this BEAUTIFUL BAGEL SUNDAY!! Now that our second session campers have officially been here for a whole entire week, we are super settled into our routines, and enjoying our classes to the fullest!!

We have some more pictures of Junk Food Day yesterday, when we had a special surprise!! Instead of our usual JFD dinner of ravioli, we enjoyed polenta and yummy, yummy delicious grilled vegetables, with some jambalaya and pork! And for our vegetarians, Chris and Lillian provided herb tofu!! But of course, we can’t be too healthy on JFD, so WE ALL SCREAMED FOR ICE CREAM (sundaes)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just kidding. We didn’t scream. The Program Directors let cabins in to get their sundaes one by one, but only the quietest cabins were allowed to enter. After all our silent efforts to get our ice cream, the reward was SWEET! (“Hehehehehe!!” – Humming Bird “Humming Bird, stop. It’s still not funny” – Cat Nap)

After we were all hyped up on our sugary sundaes, we gathered in the Rec Hall for the Staff Talent Show!! We had so many talented performances from our counselors and AWACs, including a special appearance from Hidden Valley’s own THE CANDY DROPS and THE GAZEBOYS (guh-ZEE-boyz)!! We also had some dances, like the ever classic BLOB!! And a special Lord of the Rings reenactment! We even had an epic Slack Jaw tournament! There were some wonderful acts, so check out the pictures below!!

Coming up tonight we have Cabin Night!! Our cabins will do some special activities together, and solidify the bond they share as cabin mates!! We’ll give an update later about the shenanigans we’ll have going on! But in the meantime, enjoy some pictures of the Apprentices teaching in their individual areas, in addition to photos of Junk Food Day and the Staff Talent Show!! And look out for pictures tomorrow of tonight’s cabin night, AND THE TRIP LAZY DAY!!!

Tomorrow our older half campers will take a trip to the beach, while the younger half will stay behind for Opposite Day!! It’ll be super duper fun, and we’ll get you all updated on that tomorrow!!

Until then, we have to go sneak off to find more bagels!!

The Dance, Junk Food Day, and Jake Day! Oh My!

Saturday, August 1st, 2015

IMG_4806

HELLO, HELLO, HELLO!! It’s a beautiful day here at camp, and do you know why?? I’ll tell you! IT’S JUNK FOOD DAY!!! Humming Bird and Cat Nap here with pictures and words to update y’all on this SWEET day!! (“Hahaha! That’s a knee slapper…” – Humming Bird, “Stop it, Humming Bird, that was dumb” – Cat Nap)

What on Earth is Junk Food Day? I’ll tell you! I’ll tell you! Junk food day is the beautiful day that comes once a session, when all the healthy food in the dining hall is magically replaced with JUNK FOOD!! For breakfast we enjoyed a gourmet display of donuts, pop tarts and sugary cereals (don’t worry, parents, there were eggs and fruit as well!) For lunch we will be dining on fluffernutter sandwiches (peanut butter and marshmallow fluff) and hot dogs (there will also be salad for campers who wish to opt out of the junk food mayhem) and at dinner we will settle in for a yummy meal of ravioli!

But the food here isn’t all junk!! Last night, for example, our exquisite kitchen staff cooked us a yummy southern-style meal of barbeque chicken, corn bread, collard greens, and salad, with a vegetarian option of barbeque tempeh!

Not only is today Junk Food Day, but it’s also JAKE DAY!! WHAT ON EARTH IS JAKE DAY, HUMMING BIRD?? Well, I will tell you!! Jake day is a magical day when the Video Staff takes– you guessed it!– video of every single cabin performing their cabin cheer! Cabins sit in front of Tipi Hill, shout out their cheers, and then they go down the line and everyone says their name super loud! “And what is all this fabulous footage used for, Humming Bird and Cat Nap?” Well, at the end of the session, a wonderful guy named Jake takes all this footage, and creates a digital yearbook that every camper will receive in the mail in December!! It will include footage of our Meetings, our evening programs, and our Trip/Lazy Days, in addition to every cabin’s cheers and names!! It’s a wonderful reminder of our time at camp, so look out for it in December!!!

Last night was the Super Heroes and Villains Dance!! Cat Nap and I joined our campers and got our faces painted, practiced our evil laughs at the laugh station, went through an obstacle course to keep up our litheness, and did some target practice at the basketball court!! Check out pictures of all the evil antics we got up to!!

Cat Nap and I are off to hunt for more donuts!! Tune back in tomorrow for more Junk Food Day pictures!!
